But this idea leaves out a lot of important information. A medical abortion is more complex than it sounds, and it can bring physical and emotional effects that may feel very different from what you expected.   This guide explains how the abortion pill works, what side effects may come with it, and why it's important to have all the facts before making your decision.   ### How the Abortion Pill Works The term "abortion pill" can be misleading. It's not just one pill and done. A medical abortion usually involves two medications:   - **Mifepristone** blocks the hormone progesterone, which is necessary for a pregnancy to continue. - **Misoprostol** causes contractions that expel the pregnancy tissue. Misoprostol may be taken orally or inserted vaginally, depending on medical direction.
